BRM as an Individual or Organization

The Business Relationship Management Knowledge Path to Success consists of two options: the individual and the organization.

First, the individual’s evolution starts with the introduction, then the certification process, and heads towards recognition within their own company and through the global BRM community.

Alternatively, the organization’s evolution filters down through executives. Then, they start their employees down their own individual paths while supporting them with workshops before and after certification. After certification, these workshops will help apply and assess the BRM impact on the enterprise.

First Step

For the Individual

The Business Relationship Management Fundamentals is a workshop open to everyone at any level and from any role. As long as that individual hopes to learn more about interacting with a BRM, they will learn how to thrive as a BRM.

The course is an interactive and lively one-day session to help define the role, capability, discipline, and philosophy of BRM. Moreover, it gives a basic framework, process, and model to bring structure and guidance.

It is the perfect class to introduce the individual to Business Relationship Management.

For the Organization

The Business Relationship Management Executive Brief is aimed at CEOs, executives, and business leaders to understand the role of BRMs and the results they drive.

The Executive Brief will help utilize Business Relationship Management to unite the different departments in their business. Departments such as IT, Finance, HR, and external partners work towards the same goal and drive exponential business results consistently across the industry.

From there, the executives and chosen key employees take the BRM Fundamentals workshop to start their individual BRM journey.

Second Step

The Business Relationship Management Professional is a training and certification program intended as a comprehensive foundation for BRMs at every experience level.

The exam is a closed-book, 50 Multiple Choice question test in 40 minutes. The training is available online or onsite.

Third Step

Becoming a Certified Business Relationship Manager is the next step in the BRM Road to Results. This class is intended for the intermediate-to-advanced BRM.

Additionally, it focuses on advancing the role of the Strategic Business Relationship Manager. This teaches the BRM how to use their influence and relationships to converge potential value with strategy; driving results.

You can find the CBRM book here, but you will need to apply for the course to take the certification exam. Take advantage of the $100 discount on this book by signing up with a Professional Membership to BRM Institute.

To stay up-to-date on your CBRM certification, follow the process for Continued Professional Development, outlined below.

Continued Professional Development (CPD)

The Continued Professional Development must be started within 30 days of the CBRM exam to conduct assessments of the BRM’s competency and maturity.

First, the BRM sets a SMART goal with an achievable deadline. The BRM then develops a plan to achieve the goal and chooses measurable results to assess the completion of the goal. The plan must include 20 hours of courses and conferences along with 20 hours of professional development experiences such as special projects, content authoring, or council participation.

As the BRM completes the courses and professional development, they implement their new knowledge in their work environment to achieve their SMART goal.

After one year, the BRM reflects on their experiences, where they applied what they learned, and how they met their goals. If the goal is not yet reached or has a longer timeline, the goal and plan can be reworked.

Once the goal is achieved, the process repeats to keep the BRM striving forward and increasing their knowledge. The BRM must submit for re-certification every 3 years, show they completed 40 hours of CPD every year, and pay the $85 certification fee. The fee is waived for Professional BRM Institute Members.

The CPD is designed to keep the professional BRM at the top of their game and is a continuous process to help them implement the most current business strategies in their enterprise.

Below is the step-by-step process for CPD.

Process for Continued Professional Development

1. Set SMART goal

2. Make a plan with measurable results to assess goal

3. Complete 20 hours of courses and 20 hours of professional development

4. Implement learned knowledge from course work to achieve the goal

5. After one year, reflect and assess goal using measurable results

6. Rework goal or create a new SMART goal

7. Repeat

8. In Year 3, apply for re-certification
